Your First Smart Bet

Never bet before? No problem. This 5-minute walkthrough will take you from zero to your first data-backed pick — step by step.

Step 1 of 6
What Is a Player Prop?
A player prop is a simple bet: will a player go OVER or UNDER a specific number?

Think of it like this

Your friend asks: "Do you think Jalen Brunson will score more than 27 points tonight?" If you say yes — that's betting the OVER. If you say no — that's betting the UNDER. That's literally all a player prop is.

What a prop looks like
Jalen Brunson
Points
27.5
Will he score 28+ points (OVER)?
Or 27 or fewer (UNDER)?

The ".5" is there so there's no tie — you can't score half a point. You either go over the number or stay under it. That's the whole bet.

You can bet on any stat

Points, rebounds, assists, 3-pointers made, steals, blocks — any stat a player records in a game. Points are the most common, but rebounds are actually the easiest to predict (they're the most consistent stat from game to game).

Step 2 of 6
Understanding the Odds
Odds tell you two things: how much you can win, and which side the sportsbook thinks is more likely.
OVER 27.5
-110
Bet $110 to win $100
Sportsbook thinks this is close to 50/50
UNDER 27.5
+105
Bet $100 to win $105
Slightly less likely according to the book

The simple rule

Minus (-) odds: That's how much you need to bet to win $100. So -110 means you risk $110 to win $100. You can bet any amount — $5, $10, $50 — the ratio stays the same.

Plus (+) odds: That's how much you win on a $100 bet. So +150 means you win $150 on a $100 bet. Again, scale to any amount — a $10 bet at +150 wins you $15.

Don't overthink odds

Most player props are between -130 and +130. That means both sides are roughly equally likely. ORACLE's job is to figure out which side actually has the edge — so you don't have to do the math yourself.

How to Read ORACLE's Signals
ORACLE does the research for you. Here's what to look for when picking a bet.
What each signal means
🔥 DEMON
Best signal. 6+ sportsbooks agree AND there's a big gap in lines. When this many books line up on the same number, the line is probably right — and the outlier book is giving away value.
⚡ EDGE
Value detected. There's a 1.5+ point difference between books. One book has a significantly different number, creating an opportunity for you to get a better line.
📊 HIT RATE: 72%
Historical data. This player has gone OVER this line in 72% of games this season. The higher the hit rate, the more confident you can be.
🔥 L5: 31.2
Recent form. The player's average over their last 5 games. If L5 is well above the line, they're hot. If below, they're cold.
95% CONFIDENCE
Model strength. ORACLE's 7-factor prediction model rates this pick at 95% confidence. Focus on picks above 70%.

The beginner's shortcut

If you don't want to learn all the signals right away, just go to the "Top Picks" tab. ORACLE has already done the analysis and shows you the 8 best picks of the day, ranked by confidence. Start there.

Step 5 of 6
How to Place Your Bet
Here's exactly what to do on the sportsbook app. We'll use DraftKings as an example (same process on FanDuel, BetMGM, etc.)

⚠️ Before you start

You need to be 21+ and in a legal sports betting state. You'll need a sportsbook account — DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM all offer free sign-up bonuses for new users. Download the app from your phone's app store.

Step by step on the sportsbook app
Open the sportsbook app (DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, etc.)
Tap "NBA" (or whatever sport you're betting on)
Find the game that matches your pick (e.g., Knicks vs Celtics)
Tap "Player Props" — usually listed under the game or in a tab called "Props" or "SGP"
Find the player (e.g., Jalen Brunson) and the stat (e.g., Points)
Tap OVER or UNDER based on ORACLE's pick — it'll be added to your bet slip
Enter your bet amount — start small! $5 or $10 is perfect for your first bet
Review and confirm — double-check the player, stat, line, and direction before tapping "Place Bet"

💡 Pro tip: Line shop first

ORACLE shows you the line at every sportsbook. Before placing your bet, check which book has the best line for your pick. Even a 0.5 point difference can make a huge difference over time. If DraftKings has OVER 27.5 and FanDuel has OVER 26.5 for the same player, use FanDuel — it's easier to hit.

Step 6 of 6
After You Place the Bet
Here's what happens next and how to track your results.
The three possible outcomes
✅ HIT
You win! The player went in the direction you bet. Your winnings are automatically added to your sportsbook account. You can withdraw or use them for your next bet.
❌ MISS
You lose. The player went the other direction. You lose the amount you bet. This is totally normal — even the best bettors lose 40-45% of their bets. The key is winning more than you lose over time.
↔ PUSH
Tie. The player hit the exact number (rare with .5 lines). Your money is returned in full. No win, no loss.

Track everything

Use ORACLE's Bet Tracker (in Sharp Tools → Bet Tracker tab) to log every bet you make. It automatically calculates your hit rate and profit/loss. After 20+ bets, you'll see your real performance — and you can adjust your strategy based on what's working.

The golden rules for beginners

1. Start with $5-$10 bets. Never bet money you can't afford to lose.

2. Only bet ORACLE's top picks (70%+ confidence). Skip everything below that.

3. Don't chase losses. If you lose 3 in a row, stop for the day. Come back tomorrow.

4. Check the +EV tab on the Sharp Dashboard. Even if you lose a +EV bet, you made the right decision. Over time, +EV bets always profit.

5. Learn one thing at a time. Start with the basics, then explore the How It Works guide and Sharp Tools as you get comfortable.
